Battery Service
Your vehicle’s battery provides the electrical power needed to start the engine and helps stabilize voltage throughout the electrical system.
At Precision Automotive & Transmission, we believe customers should understand their vehicles—not simply be handed a repair estimate. That’s why our motto is “The best decisions are informed decisions.” When we service a battery or starting concern, we want you to understand what failed, why it failed, and whether the battery is actually the cause.
What Does the Battery Do?
The battery stores electrical energy and supplies power to the starter motor when you turn the key or press the start button.
It also powers electrical components when the engine is off and helps support the vehicle’s electrical system when demand temporarily exceeds alternator output.
Once the engine is running, the alternator becomes the primary source of electrical power and recharges the battery.
Common Signs of a Weak or Failing Battery
Battery problems often appear gradually, but sometimes failure occurs with little warning.
Common symptoms include:
-
Slow engine cranking
-
Clicking when attempting to start
-
Repeated jump-starts
-
Dim or flickering lights
-
Electrical accessories behaving abnormally
-
Battery or charging warning lights
-
Corrosion around the battery terminals
-
A battery that repeatedly goes dead
These symptoms do not always mean the battery itself has failed. A charging-system problem, parasitic electrical draw, loose connection, or starter issue can produce similar symptoms.
Battery Testing
A battery should be tested before it is replaced whenever possible.
Our testing process can evaluate:
-
Battery voltage
-
Battery condition
-
Available cranking capacity
-
State of charge
-
Terminal condition
-
Cable connections
-
Signs of internal battery failure
A battery can show acceptable voltage while still being unable to provide enough current to start the engine properly.
That is why battery testing should evaluate more than voltage alone.
Battery Replacement
When a battery has failed, we install the correct type and capacity for the vehicle.
Modern vehicles may require specific battery technologies such as conventional flooded batteries, AGM batteries, or other manufacturer-specified designs.
Using the proper battery matters because the vehicle’s charging system may be designed around a particular battery type and capacity.
On some newer vehicles, battery replacement may also require a battery registration, reset, or relearn procedure so the vehicle’s charging system can properly manage the new battery.
Battery Terminal and Cable Service
Poor battery connections can cause starting and charging problems even when the battery itself is still good.
Corrosion, loose terminals, damaged cables, or excessive resistance can reduce the amount of current reaching the starter and other electrical systems.
Battery terminal service may include:
-
Cleaning corrosion from terminals
-
Inspecting battery cables
-
Tightening loose connections
-
Checking for damaged terminals
-
Inspecting cable ends
-
Testing for excessive voltage drop
A clean and secure connection allows the battery and charging system to operate as designed.
Charging-System Checks
A new battery will not solve the problem if the alternator is not charging correctly.
When appropriate, we check the charging system to make sure the battery is receiving the proper charge while the engine is running.
Charging-system checks may include:
-
Alternator output
-
Charging voltage
-
Battery voltage
-
Belt condition
-
Electrical connections
-
Charging-system wiring
-
Warning lights or diagnostic trouble codes
If the alternator is undercharging, the battery may repeatedly go dead.
If the charging voltage is too high, the battery and other electrical components can also be damaged.
When a Battery Keeps Going Dead
A battery that repeatedly loses its charge may have a problem elsewhere in the vehicle.
Possible causes include:
-
Weak or failing battery
-
Alternator problem
-
Parasitic electrical draw
-
Loose or corroded connections
-
Wiring faults
-
Lights or accessories remaining powered
-
Control modules that fail to enter sleep mode
Instead of repeatedly replacing or jump-starting the battery, we can diagnose why the battery is losing its charge.
Our Approach to Battery Service
At Precision Automotive & Transmission, we do not automatically assume that a no-start condition means the vehicle needs a battery.
We look at the battery, starting system, charging system, and electrical connections so we can determine what is actually causing the problem.
Depending on the concern, our inspection may include:
-
Battery testing
-
Charging-system testing
-
Starter-system checks
-
Terminal and cable inspection
-
Voltage-drop testing
-
Electrical-system diagnosis
Once we identify the cause, we can explain what we found and recommend the appropriate repair.
Keeping Your Vehicle Starting Reliably
Battery problems are much easier to deal with before the vehicle leaves you stranded.
If your engine is cranking slowly, the battery repeatedly goes dead, warning lights appear, or you simply want to know the condition of your battery, Precision Automotive & Transmission can test the system and help you determine what service is actually needed.
